They look pretty good, and when they work well, their output is fabulous, but unless you have a commercial grade stove, talk to the salesperson about the strength of the hinges on the 900mm wide oven doors. We do see quite a lot where the hinges go on the big ovens because they are made for a lighter door. If you have one, treat those hinges well, and if you are contemplating a purchase, ask the question, ‘How strong are those hinges, and how much do they cost to replace.’

Another consideration when calling us, if there is a heating problem or if the oven is tripping power, is, how is the gas connected to the stove?  We are not gas fitters so cannot disconnect a fixed gas pipe. However, if the stove is connected by hose, we can come and attend your stove.

With the wet weather many of us will be using our dryers to get the week’s washing off the line and dry into the cupboards. Think before loading up too heavily though. Don’t overload your dryer: leave space for the clothes and air to move so the damp air can be removed quickly from the dryer.

Make sure ventilation to the dryer is sufficient for the hot moist air to be removed from the back of your dryer if it is not a front vented model. It will waste electricity and possibly damage the machine, even to the point of causing a fire if it can’t remove the heated air. Similarly, keep a door to the laundry open so the air will leave the room quickly.

Lastly, after every load, clean the filter. It won’t clean itself and it will become less and less efficient with each load…. and yes.. will be a fire hazard.

The price to buy  a new cutlery basket for your dishwasher can be prohibitive. We have a large range of second hand baskets in our store at 108 Nudgee Rd Hamilton. Come and check to see if you can get one here at a greatly reduced price. (Bring your old one in to compare).

Dishwasher trays are also available for a range of models. Once again it is best to bring your old one in to compare to size.

Its a difficult question, but like everything, the age of the appliance should be a good guide for you to make this important decision….. unless it is a top brand Kleenmaid or Speed Queen that is , because these machines were made to be repaired on and on.

The limiting factor with most machines will be availability of parts.  If we can’t source parts for you, no matter how much we would like to, we probably can’t fix your dishwasher. Local brands such as Dishlex, or Simpson, Westinghouse or Fisher & Paykel however, will support their models longer, while some overseas brands may never even supply them.

Sometimes, of course, the issue may not even require parts. We often see blocked pumps for example, which simply need clearing.

Dryer safety – Burnt out capacitor, fire risk

This alien looking electrical part is pictured here sitting on a massive bed of lint taken from a dryer filter. It is called a capacitor and in its current state, can no longer do the job it was designed to do. It was burnt out because the dryer could not remove the hot air from inside the drum of the dryer, but more importantly, the lint posed a serious fire risk.

It is vitally important to remember to clean your filter each time you use your dryer; the machine will last longer, but safety  is the most important thing here to remember, and this is one way you can easily remove a threat to  yourself and your family by observing this process.

You have bought your new appliance; a dishwasher or cook top,  or maybe an oven. Make sure that the person delivering the appliance knows how to install your new machine or that you have someone lined up who knows how to install it.  This may seem an obvious part of the purchase process, but we often see dishwashers in particular which have been installed incorrectly, leading to a flooded floor on first wash.

When you buy an oven or cooktop, you should factor in the installation cost, as unless you have a licence to install electrical appliances, you must not install this yourself.
